From sunset on Tuesdays through sunset on Wednesdays (24 hour period) Pastor Cathy has called her people to a time of Fasting and Prayer. This is during the Lent season, Ash Wednesday (March 1st) is the start of Lent, which is a day of penitence or cleansing of the soul. Jewish culture marks the days from sunset to sunset. That is why Pastor Cathy has asked us to begin our Lent on Tuesday February 28th at sunset. The evening of February 28th will be the beginning and it will conclude Wednesday evening April 12th.
What’s Lent? Here’s a brief understanding: In essence, Lent is a time to give things up, for a greater purpose.
For Christians, this is a way to remember the time Jesus spent 40 days and nights alone in the Judaean desert, being tempted by Satan. As Jesus fasted during this time, we identify with this state by giving up particular foods, or solid food altogether. There is also the giving up of electronics and vices such as smoking-drinking-swearing. We exchange the time spent on these things to pray to God. As we get further along in the Lent season we may find we are relying fully on God to help us maintain our commitment to Him in the fast.
This is a time to reflect on what Christ has done for us, where we are in our relationship with him, and to PRAY! Pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ. We have had a lot of our own who have fallen ill. There are friends and family who are struggling and those in desperate need. Pray for our church, pray for our pastor and her husband. Pray for our nation. Pray for YOUR family. Pray for YOUR encouragement and to want more of Christ Jesus.
1 John 5:14-15 tells us; “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us:And if we know that he hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we desired of him.”. According to His will…this is where we exercise “less of me and more of you oh Lord!”.
